Fencing Photography Contest

Winners!

We received nearly 50 photo submissions for our first annual fencing amateur photography contest, and the winning photos are shown below (they are also being presented on Fencing.net). Images were submitted in three categories: Action, Posed, and Artistic, and each was judged on four detailed criteria, including technical quality, composition, thematic application, and artistic/photographic merit using a point system. Our four judges independently and blindly evaluated the images and applied scores, which were then compiled into cumulative ratings to rank the images and determine the winners.

To our surprise, two photographers, Tom Bryan and Kerry Osborne, nearly swept the contest, with seven of the nine final images. Only one of the judges was aware of whom the photographers were during the evaluation process. We discussed how to handle individual photographers winning multiple categories, and, in the end, we decided it was more important to judge and award the photos without regard to the quantity of winners (there was no limitation to the number of categories one person could win, and each photographer could submit up to five entries per category). 

Our judges included Jochen Faerber, photographer and FIE press officer; Craig Harkins, president of Fencing.net; Carl Borack, former Olympic fencer and Hollywood producer; and Serge Timacheff, FIE photographer and FencingPhotos.com president.
